What is IEW? 〰️

Institute for Excellence in Writing.

IEW's unique approach provides the structure that students need to develop confidence in the writing process, while gradually guiding them toward greater independence and creativity. They will learn nine structural models (note taking, writing paragraphs, stories, simple reports, writing from pictures, research reports, creative writing, essays, and critiques) to help them organize any type of composition. Additionally, stylistic techniques (strong verbs, quality adjectives, sentence openers, and more) are taught incrementally to gently move students from the basics into more sophisticated writing.

What does a lesson look like?

Mrs. Cisneros will model and teach the students how to create an outline using a series of structural models. Additionally, she will teach students to “dress up” their writing with stylistic techniques such as strong verbs and quality adjectives. Students will complete each assignment posted on Google Classroom before the next lesson. Typically, each lesson takes a week to complete.

In order to succeed in every area of life, children must hone the skills needed to communicate confidently and effectively. Through the process of learning to write well, students learn how to think clearly and to express themselves eloquently and persuasively.

Mrs. Cisneros will work as a partner with you in making sure your student gets the most out of these workshops. Mrs. Cisneros will teach the weekly, one hour classes, and assign homework on Google Classroom. The parent’s responsibility will be to make sure the student is completing the work. Parents will also be responsible for checking spelling and grammar. Mrs. Cisneros will use a rubric for grading essays, short stories, and research papers.
